What is Vedanta?
The Vedas are a vast compilation of ancient instructions and information that has guided the Indian culture for thousands of years. The Upanishads are a relatively small, but very important part of the Vedas and comprise the highest spiritual teachings of many realized souls. Broadly speaking, the term Vedanta refers to a philosophy based on these spiritual teachings.
In modern times the Vedanta philosophy was energized by a nineteenth century extraordinary Indian saint, Sri Ramakrishna. The book, “The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna” documents in detail his life and the profound teachings he gave to his disciples.
One of the unusual aspects of Sri Ramakrishna’s own spiritual journey was that at different times, he fervently practiced different religious disciplines, including Christianity, Islam, and others. His practice of each of these various religions culminated in him reaching the same ultimate Divine Truth. Consequently, he declared to his disciples that “All of the world’s great religions are true. They are different paths to the same goal”.
One of Sri Ramakrishna’s disciples, Swami Vivekananda, came to the United States in 1893, and delivered to the World Parliament of Religions, an organized clear view of the Vedanta philosophy and how it harmonizes all the world’s various religions. He established Vedanta Centers in several U.S. cities before returning to India where he established the Ramakrishna Monastic Order and the Ramakrishna Mission, a highly respected charity serving the needy.
